Hello from the North Country

Had a mixed bag of weather this week, had a small twister touch down on "The Boot" on Gullrock Lake, many of our guests were a witness to it. One group even managed to capture it on film. See photo.

Mixed review on fishing this week some guests did real well, while others found it a little slower than usual. Handed out 5 catch & release hats this week for Northern Pike Caught & Released over 40" with photos to prove their catch. Congratulations to those lucky fisherman.

Wife & I went out on Gullrock around 7.00 pm & in a hour & half boated 22 walleye , lost as many and ran out of minnows. Took our limits home. It was a fun evening. Got into camp & asked one group how they made out fishing & they said they didn't have enough walleye to feed their group of 6 people so we gave them our limits, now we can go out fishing again.

Blueberries are getting ready for picking, so if you step out of the boat might want to check the shoreline for fresh berries, we have had a perfect growing season this summer.

Those guests that have my private cell number don't bother phoning me, my replacement phone from Verizon still hasn't shown up, my cell phone is at the bottom of Gullrock Lake.

If you have room for a bag of whole corn the ducks would appreciate it, our supply is running low. Have a safe trip to camp.

 Hello From Sunset Country

We are now at the halfway point of the season, time is slipping by. Had a great week of fishing, one group of 6 fellows were boasting boating over 150 walleye per day. Lots of happy fisherman this week. Weather was cool, had a little wind & rain which made good fishing conditions. Took two gals out fishing this week, one lady went to brush a fly off her ear & knocked her gold earring into Gullrock Lake. She then took the other gold earring off & threw it into the lake saying Gullrock Lake must have the matching set as one was no good to her. We were fishing in a boat with a 8 foot beam, knocked my cell phone off my belt, you would think it would just fall onto the boat floor, no it bounced off the side of the boat into 19 feet of water never to be seen again. Decided this wasn't our day to be on the water so we returned to camp with no keeper walleye & went to town for supper.

Corn for the ducks is appreciated. Those traveling to camp have a safe trip.

Hello from the North Country

This week was decent fishing for most guests, had a few new groups in camp this week who had trouble catching their limits of walleye but by weeks end they realized minnows were the walleyes favorite food & done quite well. It does take time to learn the bottom structure of a new lake. Our repeat guests done real well.

This was the week for man overboard. had a young lad casting off the bow of a camp boat, his father warned him repeatedly that he was going to fall over board. Dad was a fortune teller. We had a young lady (first mate)untie the boat from the dock, give it a push then tried to step into it. She didn't make it. She said the water was warm. Watched her the next day & this time she sat in the boat & untied it, then gave it a push, smart girl. If we were to be giving out a Wise Owl Award both these young people would have received one, as they were both wearing their life jackets when they fell overboard.

Our corn supply is running low, if you have room for a bag or two of corn for the ducks we would appreciate it. Keep your receipt from the corn & we'll gladly reimburse you. Lots of moose on the roads, have a safe trip to camp.

Hello from Gullrock Lake

Had another decent week of fishing, everyone caught plenty of fish. Had a group pick up their full limit fishing licenses before they arrived in camp. Once in camp they caught their supper of walleye, the local Conservation Officer did a camp check and one group member had one walleye too many, he thought had purchased a full limit license & he was issued a conservation fishing license. He only had 3 walleye but that put him over the limit by one walleye, that cost $180.00.

Replaced the walkway going onto the plane dock this week. Right now grass cutting seems to be keeping us busy. Next week plan on cutting down a few trees the beavers have left partly chewed but have not yet fallen down, lots of baby ducks in camp & we are again begging for corn for the ducks.

Those folks that are traveling to camp have a safe trip.

Hello from the North Country

The longest day light day of the season is now behind us (June 21)  & winter is coming.  For those guests that call number 16 cottage their home just want to let you know we had house mover contractors in from Dryden & they spent 2 days reblocking number 16 cottage, the cottage is again level .

Had another very good week of fishing, the overcast days of Saturday & Sunday seemed to produced the best fishing, we had a few slower days when the lake was flat & sunny skies. No hat fish awards given away this week, many guests were close, but no hat. Had lots of honest fisherman in camp this week. Temps are running in the high 70's.

If you have room for a bag or two of corn for the ducks, they'll appreciate it.

Have a safe trip travelling to camp.

Hello from Sunset Country

Wow! What a week we had for fishing, it was great, real high numbers caught by some groups, gave away 14 catch & release hats for walleye released over 28" & northern pike over 40"  with photos to prove their catch. Many guests caught more than one trophy hat fish but we only give one hat per guest. Many more have photos on 35 mm cameras of their trophy hat fish. Bring along a digital camera & you can collect your hat the same day.

May Flies are hatching in our bay in front of camp & expect we'll be seeing them on the main lake soon.

Boating accident on the lake this week, one boat collided with another up by the boot, not sure what happened, all we learned is nobody was injured one camp boat from another resort was totaled, the fellows that were at fault bought the resort a new camp boat. Was an expensive trip for some fellows.

Was unable to use all the great photos from this week on our update, just posting a few of the Northern Pike photos. Some of the walleye photos will post at a later date, sorry.

Have a  thunder & lightning storm forming over camp so best sign off. If you have room for a bag of corn the ducks would appreciate it. Those traveling our hwys watch for our wild life, one group hit a deer last week. Have a safe trip to camp.

 Hello from Gullrock Lake

Another week has come & gone, nothing too exciting happened this week, did put new shingles on the roof at number 15 cottage. Most guests had good fishing, was slow for a few newcomers until they got to know the feel of the bite. Everyone had plenty of fish to eat. Nothing real big caught this week one fellow claimed a 28 inch walleye, but no photo. a few 40"  plus northern caught but guests never gave us the photos.    So they are just fish stories.

Have contacted Canadian Customs and the ban on potatoes has been lifted. They must be grade 1 inspected & in a clear plastic bag. Don't bring them if they are freshly dug from your garden.

Those traveling to camp, have a safe trip.

Childbirth at 65

With all the new technology regarding fertility recently, a 65-year-old friend of mine was able to give birth. When she was discharged from the hospital and went home, I went to visit.

'May I see the new baby?' I asked

'Not yet,' She said 'I'll make coffee and
we can visit for a while first.'

Thirty minutes had passed, and I asked, 'May I see the new baby now?'

'No, not yet,' She said.

After another few minutes had elapsed,

I asked again, 'May I see the baby now?'

'No, not yet,' replied my friend.

Growing very impatient, I asked, 'Well, when can I see the baby?'

'WHEN HE CRIES!' she told me.

'WHEN HE CRIES?' I demanded. 'Why do I have to wait until he CRIES?'

'BECAUSE I FORGOT WHERE I PUT HIM, O.K.?!!'

Hello from the North Country

The week started off with hard rain & driving winds didn't know what I was going to say on my next update, but that changes in a hurry with a camp full of fisherman. Fishing was very good & everyone caught high numbers. Had a guest at number 13 cottage get an early morning wake up call, a guest from another cottage said "I just ran into your boat parked at the dock." One group of guys were heading out at sun rise and the sun was in his eyes and he steered into the dock causing damage to a parked Pro V Lund Boat. It wasn't a real problem, as money could fix this dent. It's only a problem when money can't fix the problem.

On Wednesday got a phone call saying I had two of our camp boats swamped at the sandy beach up by the Gullrock and the fellows need assistance. Keith & I went out to offer assistance, Once at the scene of the misadventure Keith had to jump out of my boat into the lake & swim to shore to offer assistance, just like on "Bay Watch". Didn't want another boat washing up on the beach. The waves were huge. Managed to bail the water out of the swamped boats with 5 gal pails & the fisherman headed back to camp, wet but wiser.

Thursday nothing happened & we like that. Those traveling to camp next week have a safe trip.

 Hello from Gullrock Lake

This week we had a real mixed bag of weather, calm lake to rolling waves thinking you might be on "The Deadliest Catch"move set. Had a little rain but mostly sunny days. The best part the fishing was great, no problem catching your limit of walleye. Gave away over 20 catch & release hats this week for folks catching & releasing walleye over 28" & northern pike over 40" inches. Congratulations to those lucky fisherman. Those traveling to camp if you have room for a bag of corn for the ducks it would be appreciated. Have a safe trip to camp.

Hello From the Sunny North Country
What a change from last years opener. No need to bring your ski doo suit or long underwear, bring your sun screen, shorts and a fan for your cottage.  Temps have been in the high 70's & 80's still cooling at night for a comfortable sleep. Fishing has been both good & slow.  This week the lake was as smooth as Wal Mart's floor this produce some great days to sun tan on the water but fishing was slow. There were a few 40" plus Northern Pike caught this week.  Everyone in camp caught their limits of walleye but not the high numbers we usually expect. Today the wind picked up & the bite was on, had a group of fellows who were putting their limits into the boat live well when another boat pulled up beside them. It was the local Conservation Officer, he did a fish count on our guests & they had one walleye over their limit. So they told the warden they would release one walleye which they did. To watch your one extra fish swim away it cost $180.00 not to mention the razing this fellow received from his other buddies in another boat who knew how to count.
Had a forest fire just south of camp maybe 15 miles from here. Fire Crews have in under control & may have it out today as we can not seen any more smoke, not sure of the cause.
This morning seen a big Lynx in camp, he was after our rabbits & ducks.
Have completed the construction of a new board walk up to the central shower house today. Plan on replacing the side board walks in the next few weeks.
Those traveling to camp this week have a safe trip. Corn for the ducks is appreciated.

Hello From the Sunny North Country

Our early Northern fisherman are having a blast this season, have more photo's of 40" northern pike than I can post. They come in every day with big fish photos, weather had been comfortable. Have the  new slips on the fish house dock, just have the tires to put on for bumpers. New water pump has been installed in the fish cleaning house. New flooring installed in the rest rooms at the end of #10 cottage. Took delivery of 11 new Yamaha Motors & have them on boats in the water. If you have room for a bag or two of corn the ducks would appreciate it.  Those traveling to camp have a safe trip.

Hello from the North Country

Just a quick update to let our guests know that the fire ban has been lifted as we are now getting some rain. It was much needed. Leaves are budding out. It's the earliest we have seen that happen. Did go fishing for Northern Pike on Saturday, lot of action but no real big trophy fish, only fished for two hours in the rain, my new rain suit works great. Have been busy getting camp ready for the opener. Catch you later.

 April 26/2010

April 24 is the earliest we have had the plane sitting at the dock, went for a local flight, no ice to be seen anywhere. Have been busy in camp, installed a new counter top on the sink side of the fish cleaning house, #4 cabin has new flooring. Number 15 cottage installed all new lighting in the kitchen living room & bedrooms.  Installed a single dock light on the plane dock & main dock. Have been raking up a tons of leaves, maybe should let the beavers eat a few more trees. Still have a few projects to complete before the opener. Weather has been great. See you soon.
